The backstory
Fleurs de Prairie means "meadow flowers," named for the wildflowers that grow around the vineyards in the south of France. It's made by Les Grands Chais de France, a big family-owned French wine company, which is how they can sell real Côtes de Provence for less than the famous names. Côtes de Provence is the official area on the label, and it's the home of the pale, dry, barely-pink style everyone copies. The grapes are pressed quickly so the juice only picks up a blush of color, which keeps it light and crisp.
How it compares
- Fleurs de Prairie vs Whispering Angel
Same region and same style; Whispering Angel is a little rounder and more famous, while Fleurs de Prairie gets you most of the way there for several dollars less.
- Fleurs de Prairie vs La Vieille Ferme
La Vieille Ferme is cheaper and a bit fruitier; Fleurs de Prairie is paler, more delicate and looks nicer on a table, so it wins for guests.
