Is Whispering Angel worth it?

Whispering Angel is a genuinely nice, pale, dry Provence rosé, but you're paying extra for the name, and Fleurs de Prairie or La Vieille Ferme get you very close for less.

The backstory
Sacha Lichine, son of a famous Bordeaux wine family, bought Château d'Esclans in Provence in 2006 and set out to make rosé feel fancy. It worked: Whispering Angel became the bottle that made pale, dry pink wine a summer status symbol in the US. In 2019 LVMH, the luxury group behind Moët and Louis Vuitton, bought 55% of the company, with Lichine keeping the rest and still running it.
How it compares
- Whispering Angel vs Fleurs de Prairie
Also pale, dry Provence rosé for several dollars less; pick Fleurs de Prairie for your own fridge and Whispering Angel for a host gift.
- Whispering Angel vs La Vieille Ferme
A little fruitier and simpler, at about half the price; great for parties where nobody is reading labels.
- Whispering Angel vs Sutter Home White Zin
White Zin is sweet and candy-pink; pick it only if you want sugar, because Whispering Angel is bone dry by comparison.

Questions people ask
- What is Whispering Angel?
- It's a dry rosé wine from Provence in southern France, made by Château d'Esclans. It's one of the best-selling Provence rosés in the US.
- Is Whispering Angel rosé sweet or dry?
- It's dry. The strawberry and watermelon flavors come from the grapes, not sugar.
- Who owns Whispering Angel?
- LVMH's Moët Hennessy owns 55% of Château d'Esclans, the producer. Founder Sacha Lichine owns the other 45% and still runs the estate.
- Is Whispering Angel sparkling?
- No, it's a still wine with no bubbles. If you want pink and fizzy, look for a sparkling rosé instead.
- Why is Whispering Angel so popular?
- It nailed the pale, dry, pretty-bottle look just as rosé took off in America, and it has been everywhere from beach clubs to Costco ever since. It tastes good too, but the name does a lot of the selling.
- How much is a bottle of Whispering Angel?
- About $20 to $25 in stores, sometimes a little less at Costco. Restaurants often charge $60 or more a bottle.
