Moxie Vino

What is the best rosé wine?

La Vieille Ferme Rosé is the best rosé for the money at about $9, Whispering Angel is the best splurge at about $23, and Sutter Home White Zinfandel is the pick if you like your pink sweet.

Most rosé you'll see is dry and light, made from red grapes that spend just a few hours with their skins, which is where the pink comes from. Good rosé tastes like strawberries, watermelon and citrus, and it should be drunk young and cold. These are the bottles worth buying, from bargain to bragging rights.

Best value

  • Grenache, Cinsault and SyrahDrink this one

Crisp, dry, berry-light French rosé for under ten dollars. It tastes like a summer afternoon and is easy to find year round.

  • 2. Bieler Père et Fils Rosé

    about $12

    Grenache blend

Pale, dry and Provence-style at about half the price of the famous names. A great house rosé.

Worth a little more

  • Grenache, Syrah and CinsaultGood buy

Floral label, delicate peach and strawberry inside. It feels special without the splurge.

  • Grenache blendIt's fine

The rosé that made pale pink a status symbol. Silky and dry. Lovely, though you are paying partly for the name.

  • 5. Château Miraval Rosé

    about $23

    Cinsault and Grenache blend

Another top Provence pink, a little more fruit and texture than Whispering Angel. A great one to bring to a dinner.

Sweet and sparkling pink

  • ZinfandelIt's fine

Sweet, candied strawberry and totally fine if that's your thing. Dry-rosé fans should skip to La Vieille Ferme.

  • 7. La Marca Prosecco Rosé

    about $17

    Glera and Pinot Noir

Pink bubbles with a little strawberry fruit. Ideal for brunch, birthdays and anything that deserves a photo.

Good to know

Buy the newest year
Rosé is at its best within a year or so of the harvest date on the label. Last year's bottle can taste tired.
Pale does not mean better
Color depends on the grapes and how long they sat with their skins, not quality. Darker rosé is often just fruitier.
Rosé is not just for summer
Dry rosé is one of the easiest wines with Thanksgiving turkey, sushi and spicy tacos. Keep a bottle around all year.
