What it tastes like

Pineapple, ripe apple and a bit of vanilla from oak (aging in wooden barrels, which adds that toasty, creamy thing). It's smooth and round, with a hint of sweetness at the end.

Sweetnessdry → sweet
Zingsoft → zippy

Is it worth $15?

Yes, for about $15. It's the Chardonnay a lot of people mean when they say they like Chardonnay, and it's consistent year to year. You can find a better bottle, but rarely a safer one.

Who it’s for

Anyone who likes their white wine rich and smooth rather than tart. If you want crisp and zippy, grab a Sauvignon Blanc instead.

How to serve it

Fridge-cold, then let it sit out for ten minutes. Too cold and the fruit goes quiet.

The backstory

Jess Jackson, a San Francisco lawyer, swapped pear and walnut trees for Chardonnay vines in Lake County and released the first Vintner's Reserve in 1982. A stuck fermentation that year left a little sugar in the wine, people loved it, and that hint of sweetness became the house style. It has been America's best-selling Chardonnay since 1992. The family still owns it, and oak plus a touch of leftover sugar is what gives it that round, tropical, easy feel.

Questions people ask

Is Kendall-Jackson Chardonnay sweet?
It's off-dry, meaning there's a small amount of sugar left in it (around 1 to 2 grams in a glass). Most people taste it as smooth and ripe more than sweet, but it is sweeter than a bone-dry white.
Is Kendall-Jackson Chardonnay buttery?
A little. It has some creamy, vanilla notes from oak, but it's fruit-first, more pineapple and apple than butter. If you want full butter, try Bread & Butter or Rombauer.
Is Kendall-Jackson Chardonnay oaky?
Moderately. You'll get vanilla and a soft toastiness from oak barrels, but it's not a heavy oak bomb.
How many calories are in Kendall-Jackson Chardonnay?
About 120 to 125 in a 5 oz glass, and roughly 600 in the whole bottle. That's typical for a Chardonnay at 13.5% alcohol.
How much is Kendall-Jackson Chardonnay?
Usually about $13 to $17 for a 750 ml bottle, often less on sale or at warehouse stores. Bigger 1.5 L bottles are a better deal per glass.
