What's a good sweet white wine?
Moscato is the easiest good sweet white wine to find, with Barefoot and Bartenura on nearly every shelf, and a regular (not dry) Riesling is the pick if you want something sweet but less sugary.
Sweet white is the most popular starter wine in America, and Moscato is why. It tastes like peaches and orange blossom, it is low in alcohol, and it is cheap. Once you like it, Riesling is the door to sweet-ish whites that work with food too.

The main kinds of sweet white
Moscato is the sweetest and fruitiest of the everyday options, often lightly fizzy, sometimes labelled Moscato d'Asti. Riesling ranges from bone dry to very sweet, so the label matters a lot.
Gewürztraminer tastes like lychee and rose, and Chenin Blanc from the Loire can be anywhere from crisp to honeyed. Both are worth trying once Moscato starts to feel too simple.
How to tell how sweet it is on the label
Look at the alcohol first. Under about 10% almost always means real sweetness. Many Moscatos sit around 5% to 9%.
Riesling is trickier. Some bottles carry a little sweetness scale on the back label, which is a gift. German words help too: Kabinett is lightly sweet, Spätlese sweeter, and "Trocken" means dry. "Semi-dry" or "off-dry" on an American label means a touch sweet.
What to eat with sweet white wine
Spicy food is the dream match. The sugar softens heat, and the acidity (the zingy, mouth-watering part) keeps things fresh. Think Thai curry, Indian takeout, hot chicken.
Moscato is also lovely with fruit desserts, a cheese board with blue cheese, or brunch. Keep it away from heavy chocolate, which makes it taste thin.
How to serve it
Very cold. Sweet whites taste best around 40 to 45°F, which is just about fridge temperature. If it starts to taste sugary as it warms up, drop an ice cube in. Nobody is watching.
