Bottle of Rombauer Carneros Chardonnay

Rombauer is worth it if you love big, buttery Chardonnay, since it's the bottle that defines the style, but if you're not sure, try Bread & Butter first for less than half the price.

What it tastes like

Rich and creamy: butter, vanilla, baked apple and ripe peach. It's full and silky, the white-wine version of a warm blanket.

Sweetnessdry → sweet
Zingsoft → zippy

Is it worth $40?

For a gift or a celebration, yes, and fans are fiercely loyal for a reason. For a Tuesday, the price is hard to justify when cheaper bottles get close.

Who it’s for

The friend who orders "the buttery Chardonnay" every time. Anyone who prefers crisp, lean whites will find it too much.

How to serve it

Chilled, then out of the fridge for fifteen minutes. Served ice-cold, you're paying for flavor you can't taste.

The backstory

Koerner and Joan Rombauer started the winery in 1980 and released their first Chardonnay in 1984. Fun bit of trivia: Koerner's great-aunt Irma wrote The Joy of Cooking, so the family has been feeding America for a while. The buttery taste is on purpose. The wine ferments and rests for about nine months in French and American oak barrels, goes through malolactic fermentation (a second, natural fermentation that turns tart acid into soft, creamy acid), and gets stirred on its lees, the spent yeast that adds that rich, bready feel.

Questions people ask

How much is Rombauer Chardonnay?
Usually about $38 to $45 a bottle in stores, often a bit less at Costco. On a restaurant list expect roughly double that.
Is Rombauer Chardonnay oaky?
Yes, it's one of the most oaky, buttery Chardonnays on the shelf. It spends about nine months in barrels, around a third of them new, which is where the vanilla and toast come from.
Where is Rombauer Chardonnay from?
The grapes come from Carneros, a cool, windy area that straddles the bottom of Napa and Sonoma near San Francisco Bay. The winery itself sits up in St. Helena in Napa Valley.
What Chardonnay is similar to Rombauer?
Bread & Butter is the closest cheap match. Kendall-Jackson Vintner's Reserve and La Crema are lighter takes on the same California style.
Who makes Rombauer Chardonnay?
Rombauer Vineyards, which is still owned and run by the Rombauer family. It has not been bought by a big wine company.
