How many glasses are in a bottle of wine?
A standard 750ml bottle pours five 5-ounce glasses, or about four if you pour 6 ounces.
A regular bottle holds 750 milliliters, which is about 25 ounces. How many glasses you get depends entirely on how heavy-handed the pourer is.
- Standard bottle (750ml)
- About 5 glasses at 5 oz
- Half bottle (375ml)
- About 2½ glasses
- Magnum (1.5L)
- About 10 glasses
- 3-liter box
- About 20 glasses, the same as four bottles
- Sparkling in flutes
- About 6 glasses at 4 oz
Why your bottle disappears faster
Modern wine glasses are huge, and a pour that looks modest in a big bowl can easily be 7 or 8 ounces. At that rate, a bottle is three glasses, not five.
If you want to know what 5 ounces looks like, measure it once with a measuring cup and pour it into your usual glass. It's a good reference point to have.
How much to buy for a party
For a dinner party, a common rule is about one bottle for every two guests, which works out to two or three glasses each over a long evening. For a short toast with bubbly, one bottle covers about six people.
Not everyone drinks, and some guests will want something else entirely, so have sparkling water or a good non-alcoholic option on the table too. Leftover sealed bottles keep just fine.
