What is the best boxed wine?
Black Box is the best boxed wine overall (about $22 for a 3-liter box), and Bota Box is the best value (about $20); a 3-liter box holds four bottles, so both work out to about $5 a bottle.
Boxed wine is not a punchline anymore. A 3-liter box holds the same as four regular bottles, costs about what two decent bottles would, and stays fresh for weeks after you open it because the bag inside collapses instead of letting air in. The quality is simple and fruity rather than fancy, which is exactly what you want for a party, a beach weekend or a weeknight glass.
Best boxes overall
1. Black Box Cabernet Sauvignon (3L)
about $22Cabernet Sauvignon
Dark fruit, a bit of heft, and more like a real bottle of Cabernet than most boxes. Great for a dinner party where nobody needs to see a label.
2. Black Box Pinot Grigio (3L)
about $22Pinot Grigio
Crisp and clean, lemon and pear. Keep it in the fridge door and pour a glass whenever you want one.
3. Bota Box Old Vine Zinfandel (3L)
about $20Zinfandel
Jammy and a little peppery, perfect with pizza, burgers and BBQ. Bota is one of the most widely stocked box brands in the country.
4. Bota Box Pinot Grigio (3L)
about $20Pinot Grigio
Light, zesty and easy. A dependable white for backyard parties and sangria.
For a big crowd
5. Franzia Chillable Red (5L)
about $18Red blend
Honest take: it's simple, soft and slightly sweet, not something to savor. But five liters for under $20 is hard to argue with for a big party, sangria or mulled wine.
6. Franzia Sunset Blush (5L)
about $18Blush blend
Sweet, pink and served ice cold. It is the classic for a reason if your crowd likes sweet; if they like dry, buy the Bota Pinot Grigio instead.
Small format
7. Bota Box Mini (500ml)
about $6Various
About two-thirds of a bottle in an unbreakable little carton. Made for picnics, pools and anywhere glass is not allowed.
Good to know
- Do the math: 3 liters = four bottles
- A 3L box is four standard 750ml bottles, or about 20 glasses. Divide the box price by four to compare it with bottled wine.
- It lasts about a month once open
- The bag shrinks as you pour, so air stays out. Most boxes taste fine for three to four weeks after opening, compared with a few days for a bottle.
- Keep whites and rosé in the fridge
- Boxes fit in a fridge door or on a bottom shelf. Reds are happy on the counter, but 15 minutes in the fridge before pouring helps.
- Check the date on the box
- Boxed wine is meant to be drunk young. Many boxes print a best-by date; grab the freshest one on the shelf.
