What's the best cheap champagne?

The best cheap real Champagne is Kirkland Signature Brut Champagne at about $22 (Costco only), then Nicolas Feuillatte Réserve Exclusive at about $38; under $20 you're buying Champagne-style alternatives, and Freixenet cava and Mionetto Prosecco are the best of those.

Quick truth first: real Champagne comes only from the Champagne region of France, and it rarely sells for under $35. So "cheap Champagne" means one of two things. Either the least expensive real bottles, or sparkling wine from elsewhere that gives you the same celebration for $10 to $20. We've split them so you know exactly what you're buying.

Cheapest real Champagne

  • Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot MeunierDrink this one

Genuine Champagne from France at Costco, and the best deal in sparkling wine, full stop. Crisp, toasty and very easy to like.

  • 2. Nicolas Feuillatte Réserve Exclusive Brut

    about $38

Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier

The most widely available real Champagne near this price. Light and lemony, and it drops a few dollars around the holidays.

  • 3. Piper-Heidsieck Cuvée Brut

    about $40

Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay

Fruity and lively, with a bit more pear and apple than the toast-forward styles. A good "real Champagne" bottle without big-name pricing.

Budget alternatives (not Champagne)

  • Macabeo, Xarel-lo and ParelladaGood buy

Cava is Spain's answer to Champagne, made the same way with bubbles formed in the bottle. The closest taste to Champagne at this price.

  • 5. Segura Viudas Brut Reserva (cava)

    about $10

    Macabeo, Parellada and Xarel-lo

Dry, crisp and a little nutty. Another cava that tastes like more money than it costs.

  • GleraGood buy

Prosecco is softer and fruitier than Champagne, with bigger, frothier bubbles. Great if you want "fun and fizzy" rather than "toasty and serious."

  • 7. Gruet Brut

    about $17

    Chardonnay and Pinot Noir

Sparkling wine from New Mexico, made the same way as Champagne. Tastes fancier than the price suggests.

  • 8. Korbel Brut

    about $13

    Sparkling blendIt's fine

California's classic party bubbly. Simple and a touch fruity, fine for toasts and better in cocktails.

Good to know

Read the label for "Champagne, France"
Some US bottles still say "California Champagne" thanks to an old naming loophole. They are fine bubbly, but they are not Champagne from France.
"Brut" means dry, "Extra Dry" is sweeter
It sounds backward, but Extra Dry has a little more sugar than Brut. Pick Extra Dry if you like things on the fruity side.
Mixing it? Don't buy Champagne
Orange juice, Aperol or cranberry will cover the subtle stuff you pay extra for. Save real Champagne for drinking straight.
