What is Port wine?

Port is a sweet, strong wine from Portugal's Douro Valley that has brandy added partway through fermentation, so it tastes rich and syrupy like blackberry jam, chocolate and caramel, at around 19–20% alcohol.

Port is a dessert wine, not a grape. Winemakers add grape brandy before the sugar has all turned to alcohol, which stops fermentation and leaves the wine both sweet and boozy. A small glass goes a long way.

What Port tastes like

Ruby Port is the dark, fruity kind: blackberry, cherry, plum jam and a bit of chocolate. Tawny Port is aged longer in wood, turns amber-brown, and tastes like caramel, toffee, dried figs and toasted nuts.

Both are sweet and warming. The added brandy gives a gentle heat on the way down, so this is a sipper, not a glass you chug.

Where it comes from

Real Port comes from the steep, terraced Douro Valley in Portugal and ages in the city of Porto, which gave it the name. It's made from a mix of local red grapes like Touriga Nacional, so you won't see one grape on the label.

Ruby, tawny and the other label words

'Ruby' and 'Reserve' Port are young, fruity and cheap, about $15–25. '10 Year Old Tawny' or '20 Year Old Tawny' are smoother and nuttier, and the number is an average style, not an exact age. 'Late Bottled' sits in between.

An opened bottle of ruby keeps a couple of weeks in the fridge, and tawny lasts longer. That makes Port a great thing to keep around for one small glass after dinner.

What to eat with it

Ruby Port with dark chocolate, brownies or blue cheese is the classic move. Tawny shines with pecan pie, crème brûlée, salted caramel and aged cheddar.
