What is Chianti?

Chianti is a dry red wine from Tuscany, Italy, made mostly from the Sangiovese grape, and it tastes tart and savory with sour cherry, tomato leaf and dried herbs.

Chianti is a place, not a grape. It's a region in Tuscany, and the wine is made mostly from Sangiovese. It's the classic red-sauce-restaurant wine, the one that used to come in the straw-wrapped bottle.

What Chianti tastes like

Tart red cherry, cranberry and plum, plus savory things like dried oregano, tomato leaf and a little leather. It's tangy and lean rather than juicy and sweet, with a slightly dusty grip at the end.

On its own it can taste a bit sharp. With food, especially anything tomato-based, it suddenly makes perfect sense.

Where it comes from

Chianti covers a big area between Florence and Siena. The original heartland is Chianti Classico, marked by a black rooster on the neck of the bottle. Sangiovese has to be the main grape, sometimes with a little Merlot or Cabernet blended in.

What the label words mean

Plain 'Chianti' is the everyday, lighter style, usually $10–15. 'Chianti Classico' comes from the original core zone and has more depth. 'Riserva' means it aged longer before release, so it's smoother and richer.

For a few extra dollars, Chianti Classico is the best upgrade. It's often the sweet spot for flavor per dollar.

What to eat with it

Pizza, spaghetti and meatballs, lasagna, eggplant parm, anything with marinara. Chianti's tang matches tomato's acidity, so neither tastes sour. It's also good with burgers and grilled sausages.
